The American Immigration Lawyers’ Association Chapter for Georgia and Alabama Annual Conference takes place in March 2022
Coral Springs, FL — Immigration Attorney Renata Castro will speak on immigration benefits for victims of domestic violence at the VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) Panel for the American Immigration Lawyers’ Association Chapter for Georgia and Alabama.
“It is a privilege to share my expertise from filing hundreds of domestic violence relief cases with other immigration attorneys”, said Renata Castro, Founding Immigration Attorney at Castro Legal Group.
Impactful lawyering
The VAWA program allows spouses (current and those who divorced in the past two years), children, and parents of US citizens and green card holders to obtain an immigration protection in the form of a green card if they have been a victim of domestic violence. The abuse usually manifests itself in the form of religious, sexual, physical, emotional, or financial abuse.
“Representing hundreds of victims has made me realize that it is key to educate both the victims and advocates. An overwhelming average of 80% of the victims were unaware they were in an abusive relationship”, said Renata Castro. According to Castro, “immigrants are a particularly vulnerable group due to the disparity in power they experience. Knowing their rights is key.”
